How this is calculated

Conversion

Value then × CPI(to month) ÷ CPI(from month)

Uses the CPI for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), U.S. city average, not seasonally adjusted, the same index the Bureau of Labor Statistics uses for its own inflation calculator.

Average yearly inflation

(CPI to ÷ CPI from)^(12 ÷ months) − 1

The steady yearly rate that would produce the same total change over the span. Yearly figures in the table are December to December, the headline annual number.

Categories

Food, shelter, energy, medical care, apparel, transportation, education and recreation each have their own price index. Some begin later than 1913 (education and recreation start in 1993), so they appear only for ranges they cover.

Questions

What was $100 in 2000 worth today?

Choose January 2000 as the from date and the latest month as the to date; the result shows the equivalent amount and the average yearly inflation in between. The calculator updates as new CPI data is published.

Why does my personal inflation feel higher than the CPI?

The CPI averages everything urban households buy. If more of your budget goes to items that rose faster, such as shelter or medical care, your own costs rose faster. Open By category to compare.

Why is October 2025 missing?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics did not publish a Consumer Price Index for October 2025, so there is no official value for that month. Use September or November 2025 instead.
