How this is calculated

Conversions

Hourly and daily pay use the hours and days actually paid (52 weeks minus unpaid weeks). Weekly through monthly pay are the yearly total divided by 52, 26, 24 or 12, the way a salaried paycheck pays. Per hour worked also removes paid holidays and vacation.

Overtime

Federal law pays 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. California also pays 1.5 times over 8 hours in a day and double over 12, and on a 7th straight workday 1.5 times for the first 8 hours and double after (Labor Code 510). Salaried pay is treated as exempt.

Take-home pay

Runs a full year of paychecks every 2 weeks through the same engine as the paycheck calculator: 2026 federal withholding (Pub. 15-T), Social Security and Medicare, and each state's own withholding, payroll and local taxes. Bonuses are included as regular wages.

Questions

How do I convert an hourly rate to a salary?

Multiply by 2,080, the hours in a year at 40 a week: $25 an hour is $52,000. Divide a salary by 2,080 to go the other way, so $60,000 is $28.85 an hour.

How much is $75,000 a year after taxes?

For a single filer in a state with no income tax such as Texas, about $61,600 a year, or $2,369 a paycheck every 2 weeks. State taxes take roughly $1,500 to $4,500 more in most states, up to about $5,600 in Oregon; choose your state above.

Is a higher salary always the better offer?

Not always. A smaller 401(k) match, higher health premiums, a longer commute or a move to a higher-tax state can outweigh a raise. Compare offers adds all of these to the take-home pay of each job.
