Paychecks in California
- California withholding uses progressive brackets from 1.1% up to 14.63%, with the top rate including the 1% Mental Health Services Tax on income over $1,000,000.
- Allowances come from Form DE 4, not the federal W-4, and each regular allowance reduces annual withholding by $168.30; with no DE 4 or older certificate on file, employers withhold as Single with zero allowances.
- Every paycheck also has State Disability Insurance (SDI, which includes Paid Family Leave) withheld at 1.3% in 2026, with no wage cap, so high earners pay it on all wages.
- California has no local income taxes, and bonuses paid separately can be withheld at a flat 10.23%, or 6.6% for other supplemental pay such as commissions.
