Paychecks in Texas
- Texas has no state income tax on wages, so paychecks have no state income tax withholding and there is no state withholding form.
- Texas also has no state disability or paid leave payroll deduction for employees, so take-home pay depends only on federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and your own benefit choices.

What Texas taxes instead
Texas voters added a ban on a personal income tax to the state constitution in 2019 (Article VIII, Section 24-a), and in 2025 approved amendments that also bar taxes on capital gains and on securities transactions. Wages, pensions and investment income are free of state tax.
Property tax is the trade-off: Texas homeowners pay above-average rates, which fund schools and local government. Since 2025 a primary home gets a $140,000 exemption from school district taxes, and $200,000 in total for homeowners who are 65 or older or disabled.
