Paychecks in Tennessee
- Tennessee has no state income tax on wages, so paychecks have no state income tax withholding and there is no state withholding form.

What Tennessee taxes instead
A 2014 amendment to Tennessee's constitution (Article II, Section 28) bars state and local taxes on payroll or earned personal income. The Hall income tax on interest and dividends was phased out and ended for tax periods beginning in 2021, so Tennessee now taxes no personal income.
The state leans heavily on sales tax: 7% statewide plus local taxes, about 9.6% on average, which is the second highest combined rate in the country. Businesses pay franchise and excise taxes, and some licensed professionals pay a yearly professional privilege tax.
