Paychecks in Pennsylvania
- Pennsylvania withholds a flat 3.07% of compensation with no allowances, filing status or standard deduction, so there is no state withholding certificate and the federal W-4 does not affect it.
- Pennsylvania taxes employee deferrals to traditional 401(k), 403(b) and 457 plans, so the calculator figures the 3.07% on pay before those contributions come out.
- Employees also pay a 0.07% unemployment compensation contribution on all gross wages with no wage cap, which the calculator includes.
- Philadelphia's wage tax is built in (3.735% for residents and 3.425% for nonresidents from July 1, 2026, on gross pay including 401(k) and pre-tax benefits); local earned income tax under Act 32 and the Local Services Tax of up to $52 a year are not, but you can enter your local rate as a custom local rate.
