What Alaska taxes instead
Alaska has no state income tax and no statewide sales tax. Instead of taxing income, the state pays each eligible resident a yearly dividend from the Permanent Fund, its oil-wealth savings account: $1,200 in 2026. The dividend counts as income on your federal return.
Alaska is one of only three states, with New Jersey and Pennsylvania, where employees pay part of the unemployment insurance tax. It takes 0.50% of the first $54,200 you earn in 2026, so it stops after about $271, and the paycheck calculator includes it.
