Income tax in New Jersey

  • New Jersey figures its own gross income instead of starting from federal AGI, and taxes it in brackets from 1.4% to 10.75%, with separate schedules for single and joint filers.
  • There is no standard deduction: filers get a $1,000 exemption each, $1,500 per dependent, and either a property tax deduction of up to $15,000 or a $50 refundable credit.
  • Social Security is exempt, and filers 62 or older with New Jersey income of $150,000 or less can exclude up to $100,000 of retirement income on a joint return ($75,000 single).
  • Refundable credits include a state EITC of 40% of the federal credit, a child tax credit of $250 to $1,250 per child 5 or younger (raised 25% for 2026), and a care credit of 10% to 50% of the federal credit.
