Income tax in Iowa
- Iowa taxes income at a flat 3.8% and starts from federal taxable income, so the federal standard or itemized deduction and the federal tips, overtime, senior and car loan deductions all carry over.
- Social Security is fully excluded, and retirement distributions such as pensions, IRAs and 401(k)s are fully excluded for recipients 55 or older.
- Exemption credits are $40 per personal credit and dependent, and refundable credits include an EITC of 15% of the federal credit and a care credit of 30% to 75% of the federal credit, with none at $90,000 or more of Iowa taxable income.
- Residents may also owe a school district surtax, a percentage of Iowa tax set by the district where they lived on December 31.
